New Welsh Songs collection launched
21.05.2009
A new collection of Welsh songs will be launched by Eilir Owen Griffiths at the Eisteddfod yr Urdd on Monday, 25 May at 12.30pm at Trinity University College stand and on the Tesco stage at the Millennium Centre at 1.30pm.
To launch his collection, Eilir, who won the Composer’s Medal in last year’s National Eisteddfod, has invited students and former students to sing the songs that were originally composed for them.
Ifan Gwilym-Jones, Dewi Siôn Evans, Carys Davies, Lisa Marged, Rheon Llugwy-Jones and Sara Owen will be singing solos from Gorffennwyd, Clymau (words by Ceri Elen), Guernika (words by Emyr Edwards) and Y Gair (words by Ceri Elen).
"Winning the Composer’s Medal last year has given me a boost and confidence in my compositions and so here’s a book of songs from the productions that I have written either as a student or as a member of staff at Trinity University College. I wish to thank Dave Danford from Alto Publications for his support and positive influence on the project and the University for the opportunity to compose original work to be performed by students of the School of Theatre, Music and Media and the Trinity Choir”.
He continued “So many songs are translated from shows to be sung at the Eisteddfod so here’s a book of music theatre songs which were composed to be sung through the medium of Welsh."
The show Clymau, which was composed to the words of Ceri Elen, will be performed during the Trinity Festival on Sunday, 7 June. The show has already toured Wales and was performed in New York as a part of the Wales Week in the USA sponsored by the Assembly Government.
Copies of the book can be purchased at the Trinity stand on through music shops and Alto Publications.
