New book gives part-time students study tips

17.03.2009

Dr Elizabeth Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Work-based Learning at Trinity University College and colleague Dorothy Bedford has launched a new book aimed at those who are about to embark on a part-time course.

Dr Wilson says “Study Skills for Part-time Students has been specifically written for learners to improve their confidence and to build on the skills and experience they have gained at work. Throughout the book case studies are drawn from the experiences of students who have been successful in achieving their degree without giving up their employment or other commitments”.

Dr Liz Wilson has also been at the forefront of the development of an innovative Professional Practice Framework at Trinity that aims to meet the needs of employees and employers in the region. The framework provides a range of professional practice awards which can be studied using everyday work-based practices as the basis for study. The programme, developed in association with Ufi/learndirect’s learning through work, can start with just 10 credits and build up to university level certificates, diplomas as well as degree and masters’ qualifications.

Dr Wilson continued “The programme allows employers to develop the skills of their staff at a higher level through relevant work-based projects and it can also provide customised learning for staff without them having to take time away from work to attend university”. She added “For individual members of staff it is a tailored route to a recognised university-level qualification using the actual projects that they complete as part of their role. Trinity can also work with employers to accredit their own staff development programmes to add value to the training for both employers and employees”.

Dr Wilson, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, has joined Trinity’s staff from Roehampton University where she developed a range of work-based learning provision including Foundation Degrees and accredited staff development programmes. She is an active researcher in the field of work-based learning and has presented papers at national and international conferences. Prior to moving into higher education Dr Wilson had 20 years’experience as a teacher, staff developer and senior manager in the postcompulsory education sector.
