The MBA Tourism Management at Trinity is a focused postgraduate course aimed at tourism professionals.Through a combination of taught modules, work placement or work based learning, and dissertation students develop skills and knowledge which can be directly applied within the workplace.

The course comprises the following modules:

  • Tourism Contexts
  • Marketing
  • Managing Tourism Organisations
  • Human Resource Management
  • Client Management
  • Strategic Management
  • Financial Management
  • Research Methods
  • Dissertation

Assessment is by coursework and involves a range of formats such as essays, reports, financial tasks, work placement reflection and presentations. On a full time basis the course runs, on a 1 day a week intensive basis, so it is suitable for day release – Terms are as follows:Wales

Term 1 - October to December (4 taught modules)
Term 2 - January to March (4 taught modules)
Term 3 - April to June (work based learning)

Following successful completion of the taught modules students will be able to embark on the dissertation, which is an independent piece of research of 20,000 words.

Programme Specification

The main educational aims of the programme are:Wales

  • to provide a detailed understanding of the nature of tourism within a regional, national and international perspective;
  • to maximise local linkages and partnerships to provide students with the experience of a wide range of tourism organisations and projects;
  • the enhancement of lifelong learning skills and personal development to enable students to work with self direction, originality and to contribute to business and society at large;
  • to enable students to undertake advanced study of tourism organisations, their management and the changing external context in which they operate;
  • to develop students’ ability to apply knowledge and understanding of business and management to complex issues, both systematically and creatively, to improve business and management practice within the tourism industry;
  • to enhance students’ transferable skills of research, interpretation, and critical evaluation;
  • to develop students’ intellectual skills, including critical reasoning, analysis, creativity and reflection;
  • to foster and enhance all aspects of the management of client / provider relationships.

Programme Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

After completing this MBA Tourism Management programme students will have developed the following knowledge and understanding to the appropriate Higher Education level:

  • relevant knowledge and understanding of tourism organisations and the external context in which they operate;
  • knowledge and understanding of the processes, procedures and practices for effective leadership and management of tourism organisations;
  • knowledge and understanding of change management and development issues relating to tourism;
  • knowledge and understanding of the strategy, behaviour and marketing of tourism organisations;
  • knowledge and understanding of the concepts, principles, theories and techniques relevant to a postgraduate level of study in tourism management.

Intellectual (thinking) skills

After completing this MBA Tourism Management programme students will have developed the following intellectual skills to the appropriate Higher Education level:

  • the ability to interpret and critically analyse data and text from a wide range of sources;
  • the ability to respond to arguments, concepts and paradigms, and to critically evaluate them in terms of academic and industry based evidence;
  • the ability to create and develop research ideas which will contribute to the body of knowledge on tourism management;
  • the ability to manage and reflect on one’s own learning and continual professional development;
  • the ability to create, evaluate and assess a range of options for problems and issues relating to tourism management together with the capacity to apply ideas and knowledge to a range of situations.

Professional/Vocational skills

After completing this MBA Tourism Management programme students will have developed the following professional/vocational skills to the appropriate Higher Education level:

  • to have abilities in project design, development and management;
  • to analyse and interpret primary and secondary data;
  • to plan and undertake a small scale research project;
  • to make decisions in complex and unpredictable situations;
  • to be adaptable, and show originality, insight, and critical and reflective abilities which can all be brought to bear upon problem situations;
  • to be proactive in recognising the need for change and have an ability to manage change.

Key/Common skills

After completing this MBA Tourism Management programme students will have developed the following key skills to the appropriate Higher Education level:

  • structure and communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing;
  • manage their time, prioritise and work to deadlines;
  • assess and reflect on the ideas and arguments of others;
  • effective interpersonal skills;
  • the ability to retrieve, sift and select information from a variety of sources;
  • operate effectively in a variety of team roles and take leadership roles where appropriate;
  • be self-directed and able to act autonomously;
  • use IT and computer skills for data capture, to identify source material and support research presentations.

No fees for those working in SMEs in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire for the 2007/2008 academic year.
