Iwan Bala is an artist and writer. Born in north Wales in 1956, he has lived in Cardiff since 1974 and has been a practising artist since 1984. In 1990 he was artist in residence at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and he completed an M.A. in Fine Art at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff in 1993. In 1997 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. He has exhibited widely, both in the UK and abroad and in several international site-specific art events as well as curating several exhibitions. His work is in the collections of The National Library of Wales, National Museum, Wales, National Museum of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, Museum of Modern Art Wales, Contemporary Art Society for Wales and many private collections.

His writing has appeared in Planet, Barn, Golwg and The Western Mail and he has introduced and edited a collection of essays, Certain Welsh Artists (Seren),1999. Other published work include Offerings and Reinventions (Seren/Oriel 31), 2000, Darllen Delweddau (Gwasg Carreg Gwalch) 2000 Here + Now (Seren) 2005 and Hon, Ynys y Galon (Gomer) 2007.He lectures widely on his own work and on contemporary art in Wales, and has presented several art programmes on S4C. He was employed as Project Manager for Cywaith Cymru . Artworks Wales, the national public art body for Wales for five years before taking a lecturer’s post at Trinity College in September 2007.
